Enfield & Haringey Athletic Club round-up

11:10am Friday 19th March 2010

THE senior Inter-Counties cross country championship at Birmingham last Saturday proved to be the highest quality domestic race staged during the 2009-10-winter season.

Won convincingly by Mo Farah, the 12km event saw Enfield & Haringey AC’s Jon Pepper bounce back from the trauma of finishing 113th in the National championships at Leeds only two weeks previously to take 19th position. Despite a slight recurrence of the hip problem from Leeds during the race, Pepper was second home for Hertfordshire and hopefully has run himself into the Great Britain team for the World Students CC Championships in Canada on 10th April.

Further north in Sheffield, several EHAC members contested the British Universities’ indoor track & field championships over the weekend. Three Enfield & Haringey athletes made it onto the victory podium with bronze medal winning performances. Luke Fagan whose strong event is the 200m ran a season’s best of 6.93 seconds over 60 metres for his third place while Leron Norbert cleared 2 metres in the high jump where, with two athletes winning silver after tying for second place with identical progressions, it was decided that Norbert should be awarded a bronze. Dee Bakre’s 11.63m season’s best in the triple jump earned her third place and a bronze medal.

Charlotte Rose was just outside the medals with a 12.65m fourth placing effort in the shot putt.

In the Silverstone Half marathon on Sunday, Phoebe Thomas registered a personal best of 1:28:33 for seventh place in the women’s race, finishing 88th overall.
